In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Brother is guilty of the death of Doodle. “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” This shows how Brother had disliked Doodle from an early age, also the fact that Brother wanted Doodle dead. If Brother had tried to kill Doodle then, then subconsciously he always wanted Doodle to be dead, because Doodle was an embarrassment and “invalid”. “...that streak of cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us.” This quote shows how Brother left Doodle behind, it even states how Brother left Doodle behind out of cruelty. Brother knew what he was doing, and he knew that Doodle was not able to handle the strain.
